Rio Chama – Plein Air Painting with Cody DeLong

Plein air artists will enjoy the awe-inspiring Rio Chama Canyon scenery as a subject for this 3 day river adventure. You will enjoy the stunning light on the sandstone canyon walls and Ponderosa pine forest during prime times of the day. Cody DeLong will offer tips on how to capture this magical landscape in northern New Mexico. We will travel at a leisurely pace so artists can paint at your leisure. All boating gear, delicious, wholesome meals and guides are included.

The Rio Chama is a protected river under the Wild and Scenic River Act. This 35 mile river canyon is recognized for its unique splendor and wilderness quality. There is easy floating with a few easy Class II-III rapids to add some excitement. The camps are nestled amidst towering Ponderosa pines providing a relaxing reprieve from our busy world.

About Cody DeLong

Growing up in rural Michigan, Cody was instilled at an early age with a solid work ethic and an affinity for nature and all its beauty.

A natural artist, Cody has been drawing and painting since he was five and is continually inspired by the desert which has been his home for most of his adult life. “Each painting I do begins with an underlying idea, something that’s inspired me. I try to distill this simple abstract design into my own interpretation of nature. The balance I’m searching for is creating a work that’s technically proficient as well as ‘painterly’. The result hopefully will provide the viewer with a perspective they have not seen before.”

A passionate student of art, Cody has studied at the Loveland Academy of Fine Arts, as well as the Scottsdale Artists School, where, in 2003, he was awarded a merit-based scholarship. In 2004, the Oil Painters of America selected him as that year’s Shirl Smithson Scholarship winner.
