RIO GRANDE RIVER - LOWER TAOS BOX
This remote
and exotic river- America's first wild and scenic river- carves like a knife
through the broad volcanic plain near Taos, New Mexico. It offers an
outstanding and challenging wilderness whitewater experience that has been
rated one of the "Best in the West" for its spectacular scenery and Class IV
rapids. Carving through the 800 foot deep Rio Grande Gorge, the Lower Taos Box
offers unparalleled excitement with such rapids as Ski Jump, Powerline Falls,
Rock Garden, and Sunset Falls- as vigorous and demanding as any continuous set
of rapids in the Rockies. Our two day overnight trips begin with a mile-long
hike to the bottom of the Gorge near Little Arsenic Springs and a swift and
pleasant run past Dunn's Bridge to camp on the rim above Manby Hot Springs. Day
two traverses beneath the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge to finish, in a final furious
flurry, at the Taos Junction Bridge. A third night might include the Race
course or Pilar Run below the gorge with such well-known rapids as Albert's
Falls, the Narrows, Big Rock, and Sous Hole.
